Officials in Papua New Guinea have reportedly written a letter to the UN saying two thousand people were buried alive in a landslide on Friday.
That number is up from a previous estimate of 670 killed.
It happened in a remote area of the northern Enga province.
Authorities are warning of further hillside collapses.
Rescue efforts have been complicated by the volume of mud and debris.
Some bodies have been recovered-- but many are still buried.
Al Jazeera’s Jessica Washington is in Jakarta for the latest on this developing story.
