This short film shows the U-load transport mechanism. It spools the tape up and wraps it almost completely around the spinning drum. The U shaped tape path is what gave U-matic its name. Sony continued to use a similar U wrap system for it's Betacam entire series which included Betamax right through to HDCAM.

We copy and convert most video tapes including U-matic, U-matic SP and HighBand U-matic to digital formats for editing and onto DVD for viewing.
