Forget Enzo Fernandez, Raheem Sterling or even Joao Felix: Chelsea already have an outstanding no.10 in Christopher Nkunku. And he’d solve a lot of their problems if Enzo Maresca just played him in the right position.
At RB Leipzig, Nkunku started off as a wide player that largely set up goals for other team mates. But in the 2021/22 season he was shifted inside to play as a No.10 and suddenly started scoring goals by the bucketload.
So much so that in his final season in the Bundesliga he finished the campaign joint-top of the goalscoring charts, with more goals than Kolo Muani, Marcus Thuram and Serhou Guirassy.
Last season, Chelsea only had one obvious goal scorer in Cole Palmer, with Nicolas Jackson averaging just 0.43 goals per 90. That’s considerable less than Nkunku averaged for RB Leipzig as a No.10
And if Maresca allows Nkunku the chance to play behind the striker and alongside Palmer, Chelsea would likely find themselves with another exceptional goalscorer and clear match winner.
