It happened to be mating season during our visit to Beacon Hill Park, so not only were the males showing off their beautiful feathers quite frequently, they were also trying to attract female birds with their unusual (very loud) squawk.
Peacocks make fake sex noises to attract the attention of females, according to scientists. The birds have a wide variety of calls, including a distinctive hoot during mating. When a male peacock has successfully attracted a female, it rushes at her while making this noise and attempting to mate.
Males often continuously emit vocalizations during the breeding season that attract female mates. Male peacocks, known for their brightly colored jewel-toned feathers, show off their colorful train or tail to attract a female. When it comes to selecting a mate, peahens (female peacocks) decide what is attractive. Peahens often choose males for the quality of their trains.
People living across from Beacon Hill Park know all too well that this time of year is mating season for peacocks. They’re a vocal bunch even when they stay in the park.
Beacon Hill Park is a 75 ha (200 acre) park located along the shore of Juan de Fuca Strait in Victoria, British Columbia. The park is popular both with tourists and locals, and contains a number of amenities including woodland and shoreline trails, two playgrounds, a waterpark, playing fields, a petting zoo, tennis courts, many ponds, and landscaped gardens.
Free, except there is a small farm with farm animals for children to pet and learn about, which is free but strongly suggests a donation - gotta feed those animals!
Be prepared for the slightly abrasive sound of the peacocks who obviously own the park!
