The next day, while the vessel is sailing along China Sea in position latitude 7 degrees 00 minutes N, longitude 112 degrees 00 minutes E, course 030 degrees True, speed 12.0 knots , you see a lot of smoke coming out of the pump room and you hear the fire alarm. You hurriedly sent a distress fire alert by MF/HF DSC. However, after a few minutes, the crew realized that there was no fire and the smoke was just steam coming out of a ruptured stripping line in the pump room. After shutting off the main steam valve in the Engine room, the alarm in the pump room was eventually cleared. The Master decided to send a distress cancellation via MF/HF DSC.

1. Click MF/HF tab.
2. Press the Power button.
3. Click the button besides ‘ALERT’.
“NAT:UNDESIGNATED” will be highlighted.
4. Click once on the Selector Knob.
5. Press and Hold Selector Knob and turn clockwise till ‘FIRE, EXPL’.
6. Click the button near OK.
7. Click the Red Distress Button to lift off lid cover.
8. Press the Red Distress Button for 5 seconds till Alert.
“OWN DISTRESS Nat: Fire Explosion” will be displayed.
Wait till MF/HF unit has sent alert.
9. Press the button beside ANNUL.
10. Press the button beside CONFIRM.
11. Wait for DSC Send Complete
“Voice Cancel” will appear.
Lift the handset and press the PTT button while broadcasting:
“All stations, All stations, All stations,
This is M/V_____________ (vessel name spoken 3 times)
CALLSIGN _____,
MMSI ________
POSITION (Latitude____, Longitude_____)
CANCEL our Distress Alert of (UTC time)
Over”.
