Mark O'Connor performs a medley of his own guitar themes he's written. Mark's distinctive abilities in "cross-picking" with a flat pick was inspired by his heroes, mentors and friends - Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson.
The music world said goodbye to Earl and Doc in 2012. So many memories and cherished times. And what music they gave us all during their long lives!
Mark collaborated with both of these icons on stage and in the studio, including performing on Doc's first ever instrumental album and Earl's second instrumental album. Both Doc and Earl had Mark play with them often in the 1980s. Doc took Mark to Europe for his very first time. Doc loved having Mark play fiddle and mandolin with him, his son Merle who also played guitar and bassist T. Michael Coleman on the road and on albums. Mark was the only person not from the Scruggs family to be featured throughout Earl's 2nd instrumental album. The last time Earl and Mark performed together was as a trio, including Earl's son Randy on guitar. They played Earl's classic Foggy Mountain Breakdown at the Kennedy Center Honors 2007 together.
Some of Mark's guitar themes performed here go back to his early teenage years, a time when he was hoping to get to play with Doc and Earl some day. The only tune in the medley that is not an original, is the Carpenters' "Sitting On Top Of The World" (recorded for his Markology guitar album).
