Japan spearheaded the initiative to measure global greenhouse gases from space. Launched in2009, GOSAT (later renamed IBUKI)embodies the technologythat many considered impossible.
Under the Paris Agreement, each country must determine, plan, and report on the contribution that it undertakes to mitigate global warmingevery 5 years. Along withother space organizations around the world, JAXA supports the implementation of the Agreement by offeringsatellite data that provides a scientific basis. Able to monitor uniformly across the entire globe, earth observation satellites providedata that shapes global approaches to tackle climate change.
On October 29, 2018, JAXA launched the second GOSAT, the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite-2. This video updates the one uploaded in December 2017.
