TRIGGER WARNING: This features what I consider to be the scariest moment in any Hanna-Barbera cartoon. It’s from the classic episode A Drop of Darkness, if you’ve seen it you know what I am talking about.
I finally returned to the world of Mer to do a music video and I must say that this will most likely go down as not only my favorite Pirates of Dark Water video but so far the best of the few music videos I have made this year. After I completed my first video I made the amazing discovery that the Japanese dub has an amazing original song performed by Hironobu Kageyama. It was so good that I wanted to watch all 8 of the episodes I remembered seeing as a kid again and use them for this video. Because this song was actually written for it I felt it was only natural that I use them as they were my basis for the love of the series. The Little Leviathan was okay but my least favorite episode in the first season while all the others were A or A+. Interestingly Andorus, the first episode after the pilot, was the first episode I ever saw and it was good enough to hook me for life. Other highlights besides the aforementioned A Drop of Darkness include Panacea and The Collection. I just knew I would always have to end the video with the climax from the first season finale The Dark Dweller. The Dark Water is the scariest thing Hanna-Barbera has ever made, so creating a being responsible for making it really led to one of the biggest “Oh spit!” moments in 90s animation. It even felt like a Japanese anime or especially a Super Sentai series at the end with the Dark Dweller growing big but being beaten by the combined power of the treasures and friendship. Ren's friends even hold his back like some Sentai members do when their respective Red is getting ready to deliver the final blow to the last villain. I am incredibly pleased with how this turned out, a lengthier run time for the song would have been nice but considering that I could still cover all the highlights from 8 mostly excellent episodes it's as good as it's going to get.
This video was made using Windows Live Moviemaker. The footage and the song were taken from official DVD and CD releases. I do not own Pirates of Dark Water or this song, they belong to their respective owners.
