STORYLINE:
The European Union is pledging another 110 (m) million euros - equivalent to 156 (m) million US dollars - to programmes to liquidate the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion, it announced on Monday.
The announcement was made by European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso in Kiev where he was holding talks with Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych.
The news comes a day before donor nations are due to meet to see if they can raise 740 (m) million euros, or 1055 (m) million US dollars, for Chernobyl programmes.
That is the sum that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development estimates is still needed to build a long-term shelter over the reactor that exploded on April 26, 1986 and for a facility to store nuclear waste at Chernobyl.
In a news conference following the talks between the EU and Ukrainian delegations, Yanukovich said: "I'm sincerely thankful for the contribution made by European Commission, EU member states and other leading countries in the world which will be used for implementation of Chernobyl related projects."
Barroso said he would give details on how the donation is being apportioned on Tuesday.
