Facility Layout Facility layout is a process of arranging all the tangible resources available in the production or a service facility in a manner to maximize the productivity. The resources can be men, material or a machine installed in the production facility.
Layout planning ensures smooth flow of work and material in a way that it leads to saving in cost and time. Layout planning is a continuous process,it is not only done for new facility but it is required as and when there is addition of men, material and machine in the existing facility.
Definition According to Moore," Plant Layout is a plan of an optimum arrangement of facilities including personnel, operating equipment,storage space,material".

1 Maximum Safety
The layout should be design in a manner to ensure maximum possible safety of the people working in the production area.
2. Maximum utilisation of space
The layout should be planned in a way that space of production or service area is used optimally.
3. Minimum distance and travel time
Material and men have to cover a distance in the process of converting raw materials into finished goods.
4. Minimum investment
The layout model with minimum investment of capital is selected.The capital saved can be put into use for other productive purpose
5. Maximum coordination
The input and output operations should be planned in such a way that no department or person or process is halted for the other and work is executed in the most efficient manner.
