(2 Dec 2016) Austrian presidential hopeful Norbert Hofer criticised the European Union in his final election rally on Friday in Vienna ahead of Sunday's election.
Hofer, the candidate from the Freedom Party, is running against Alexander Van der Bellen, who actually won the presidential elections in May by a margin of less than one percentage point.
But the Freedom Party contested the result, claiming widespread irregularities and on July 1 the Constitutional Court ruled that they had to be re-held.
They were then rescheduled for October, only to be pushed back to December 4 after the discovery that the adhesive on some absentee ballots was faulty, meaning they wouldn't seal.
At the rally on Friday, Hofer reiterated his stance that immigrants should only get access to social benefits after being employed in Austria for five years.
He also criticised the EU for failing to connect with people.
Regarding Russia, he campaigned for the removal of the sanctions as those had only harmed the economy but not brought peace to Ukraine.
Since announcing his candidacy last year, Hofer has emerged as a major figure of his right-wing populist Freedom Party.
