Kuba Snopek tells the story of Nowa Huta, a district located in the eastern part of southern Polish city, Krakow. Soviet architects used prefabrication and centralised ways of designing to build the urban center quickly. Its quick urbanization led to the change in how churches and community spaces were built. During communism, churches were form of protest, making the construction of them taboo. That all shifted in the 60s, along with a reform of Catholicism and its emphasis on community. This is just one story of many about the construction of churches from Poland during the communist era and an example of community space that can be seen in the physical landscape and architecture of Poland.
Kuba Snopek is a Polish urbanist and researcher. He is an expert on post-communist cities: planning, mass-housing, the preservation of intangible heritage. Snopek has worked on architectural and urban planning projects and research, and he has produced exhibitions in Poland, Russia, and at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. He taught and curated educational programs (including the experimental digital program Vector) at the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, Russia, and taught at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. His book “Belyayevo Forever,” on the preservation of intangible heritage, was published in English, Polish and Russian. Nowadays he is working on a project called “Architecture of the VII Day” – a massive research of Polish sacral architecture during times of communism.

reSITE is an international platform connecting people and ideas to improve the urban environment. We work at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, politics, culture, and economics.
We feature thought leaders whose work pushes the boundaries on how we build, design, regenerate and create life in cities, and frame them through many lenses, convening them in one place. We act as a catalyst for social action and innovative leadership. We encourage an exchange of ideas about making cities more livable, competitive, and resilient. We protect and promote public space, architecture, and sustainable development in cities.
All to make our cities more livable, competitive, resilient, inclusive, mobile, and designed with humans in mind.
