STORYLINE:
Clashes broke out between rival fans as Bosnia met Yugoslavia in a friendly international football match in Sarajevo on Wednesday.
Groups of fans hurled stones and rocks at each other as Bosnian police tried to separate the warring factions, who were allocated separate stands for the match.
It was the first game between the teams on the territory of the old Yugoslav Federation, from which Bosnia seceded in 1992.
The last time they played each other was in January 2001 in India at the Millennium Cup.
Trouble was expected and security was stepped up with a heavy police presence and water cannon in place.
When the two countries play each other, old ethnic loyalties and enmities are bound to come to the surface.
Yugoslav supporters included Bosnian Serbs who have close ties with their ethnic kin in Yugoslavia, which backed them during the 1992-5 war.
Most of them support the Yugoslav rather than the Bosnian team.
The Bosnian team is made up mostly of Muslims, but there are also several Croats and one Serb.
