The clock is ticking for US lawmakers to pass a new farm bill, which is set to expire at the end of September. It is vital for farmers and ranchers and important to the faithful as well. The farm bill governs a variety of programs but it also regulates food programs which many Catholic organizations rely on, including the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), which has been around for 90 years. Now, House Republicans are pushing for funding cuts for the program and Democrats claim they're abandoning the needy. Representative Hakeem Jeffries says, "The $30 billion cut to SNAP benefits is unacceptable, unconscionable and un-American." Around every 5 years, the farm bill is updated. This year's cost is roughly $430 billion. The average monthly SNAP benefit for a family of 4 in 2024 was just over $700, for families with a net income at or below the poverty level. Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
