Born in Colombia but raised in Louisiana, Dr. Alejandro Carrasquilla is a fourth-year neurosurgery resident at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai who was drawn to a career in the field because of his fascination with the human brain and how it contributes to our identity. His favorite part of his neurosurgical training at Mount Sinai so far has been the wide variety of cases he has been able to operate on.
“Anywhere from skull base surgeries to spine surgeries, to vascular cases, to epilepsy surgeries, just watching how they impact people in different ways—that has been an amazing part of the training,” he says.
