Well it's not every day that you lay eyes on 90,000 clay tobacco pipes. I couldn't believe my eyes! I expect you're wondering where. You'll never guess! Well, come with me and find out, and discover some of the stories behind them.
Keens steakhouse in New York was established at the end of the 19th century. It has a fascinating history which I enjoyed finding out about when I visited there in May 2022. Bonnie Jenkins, the pipe warden, took me on a tour of the restaurant and showed me some of the marvellous artefacts which are on display.

I was then made an honorary member of the pipe club! What a special day. I signed a clay pipe which will be kept at Keens, and Bonnie gave me a tiny clay pipe to bring home with me.
I gave Bonnie some clay pipes which I found in the River Thames, and also some clay pipes made by David Higgins of Period Pipes. David Higgins is the chairman of the Society for Clay Pipe Research and the Pipe Archive. He is one of the only remaining clay pipe makers in the UK who makes pipes by the traditional method.
