Stonehenge is the most architecturally sophisticated and only surviving lintelled stone circle in the world. The earliest stage of the monument is one of the largest cremations cemeteries known in Neolithic Britain. Built in several stages, Stonehenge began about 5,000 years ago as a simple earthwork enclosure where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead. The stone circle was erected in the centre of the monument in the late Neolithic period, around 2500 BC.
Stonehenge is a mystery because nobody knows who built it and for what purpose. At best, we know that these stones were put into place by unknown people more than 4,000 years back. Some historians have surmised that the Stonehenge was an ancient burial place but there is no conclusive evidence to support this theory. There are two types of stone at Stonehenge – the larger sarsen stones and the smaller 'bluestones'. The sarsen stones are a type of silcrete rock, which is found scattered naturally across southern England.
His studies of stone circles in other parts of Britain led him to conclude that they were built by the native inhabitants, rather than Romans or Danes as others had proposed. As the Druids were the only prehistoric British priests mentioned in the classical texts, he attributed Stonehenge to the Druid. The stone circle dates from about 2500 BC, in the late Neolithic period. We don't know exactly how the stones were brought to Stonehenge, but some of them – the bluestones – came from the Preseli Hills in south-west Wales, over 150 miles (250km) away. We can only speculate as to what Stonehenge's purpose was.Stonehenge is a stone circle in Wiltshire, England. ...

Nobody knows for sure how the stones were moved to Stonehenge.Researchers say the site was created based on a solar year of 365.25 days to help people keep track of days, weeks and months. The mystery of Stonehenge may finally have been unravelled by researchers who say it's a giant solar calendar that may link the UK to ancient Egypt. Some believe it to be an astronomical calculator, an observatory that helped demarcate the seasons. Others view Stonehenge as a place of healing, a kind of prehistoric Lourdes, which hosted hordes of pilgrims.
It consists of an outer ring of vertical sarsen standing stones, each around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide, and weighing around 25 tons, topped by connecting horizontal lintel stones. Inside is a ring of smaller bluestones.
