The architecture of Algeria encompasses a diverse history influenced by a number of internal and external forces, including the Roman Empire, Muslim conquest of Maghreb, French colonization and movements for Algerian independence.
Neoclassical style: is an architectural style produced by the Neoclassical movement that began in the mid-18th century in Italy and France. It became one of the most prominent architectural styles in the Western world
Characteristics:
-The constructions are parallelepipedic in shape, almost cubic, with wide and regular openings on all the facades, these are either large windows or balconies that sometimes go around two facades
- The symmetry, the rhythmicity of the openings, openings in height
- The ground floors, bordering the squares or avenues and important streets are reserved for shops and often set back under arcades
- The use of columns and orders
- The triangular or segmental pediment
- Balusters and cornices, floral bas-reliefs, exterior portico (entrance)
- The roofs are tiled and the few terraces are inaccessible
- The levels vary from two to three floors, rarely four
- The decorative motifs are very varied and contribute to the animation of the façade. The main motif is the balcony overloaded with decorations (fantasy) it is at this level that the windows, the ironwork and the corbels (consoles) are treated
Neo-Moorish style: or Moorish Revival is one of the exotic revival architectural styles which emerged in Europe, North African colonies and America in the wake of Romanticist Orientalism. It reached the height of its popularity after the mid-19th century, part of a widening vocabulary of articulated decorative ornament draw from historical sources beyond familiar classical and Gothic modes. It drew on elements from classic Moorish architecture and as a result from the wider Islamic architecture
Characteristics:
-Monumental doors
- Use of horseshoe arches, lambrequin, stalactite
- Balcony woodwork, corbelling
- Columns with cylindrical or fluted barrels in twists
- Simple corbel capitals
- Wall bases in earthenware tiles
- Framing of the bays are covered with ceramic tiles with very varied patterns of flowers and arabesques
- The spandrels are treated with polychrome earthenware tiles
- Use of the minaret element in public buildings
- Use of the dome, merlons and pinnacles
Baroque architecture: architectural style originating in late 16th-century Italy and lasting in some regions, notably Germany and colonial South America, until the 18th century. It had its origins in the Counter-Reformation, when the Catholic Church launched an overtly emotional and sensory appeal to the faithful through art and architecture. Complex architectural plan shapes, often based on the oval, and the dynamic opposition and interpenetration of spaces were favored to heighten the feeling of motion and sensuality.
The first buildings constructed by the French administration largely referenced a number of established European styles including Baroque Revival and Byzantine Revival. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 21st century
Other Characteristics:
- Large domes or cupolas.
- Elaborate motifs and decorations.
- Gilded sculpture on the interior and exterior (statues were made from plaster or marble and included high contrasting colors and textures).
- Attention –grabbing features (include curved walls, painted ceilings, vaulted ceilings, columns, sculptures, arches, niches and broken pediments.... many of these elements give off a sense of motion known as dynamism.
