Rio de Janeiro Drone Flight: Rocinha is the largest favela in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiros South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is located about one kilometre from a nearby beach. Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it. Almost 100,000 people live in Rocinha, making it the most populous favela in Brazil. Although Rocinha is officially classified as a neighbourhood, many still refer to it as a favela. It developed from a shanty town into an urbanized slum. Today, almost all the houses in Rocinha are made from concrete and brick. Some buildings are three and four stories tall and almost all houses have basic sanitation, plumbing and electricity. Compared to simple shanty towns or slums, Rocinha has a better developed infrastructure and hundreds of businesses such as banks, medicine stores, bus routes, cable television, including locally based channel TV ROC (TV Rocinha), and, at one time, a McDonalds franchise. These factors help classify Rocinha as a favela bairro, or favela neighborhood. // Rio de Janeiro is a huge seaside city in Brazil, famed for its Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, 38m Christ the Redeemer statue atop Mount Corcovado and for Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak with cable cars to its summit. The city is also known for its sprawling favelas (shanty towns). Its raucous Carnaval festival, featuring parade floats, flamboyant costumes and samba dancers, is considered the worlds largest. // A Rocinha é uma favela localizada na Zona Sul do município do Rio de Janeiro, no Brasil. Destaca-se por ser a maior favela do país, contando com cerca de 70 mil habitantes. A região passou a ser considerada um bairro e foi delimitada pela Lei Nº 1 995 de 18 de junho de 1993, com alterações nos limites dos bairros da Gávea, Vidigal e São Conrado. O nome advém de uma fazenda, uma roça que na década de 1920 foi tomada pela expansão da mancha urbana. Em 1927 foi loteada por Castro Guidas & Cia, paralisado pela prefeitura, a Rocinha foi crescendo sem nenhuma regularização dos terrenos. Em 1970, a favela possuía 130 mil habitantes segundo o IBGE.
