Earlier this year, the authorities declared the Chittagong Zoo closed due to a rise in Covid case as a result enthused visitors missed an opportunity to meet him
After three out of two newborn tiger cubs died at the Chittagong Zoo during the pandemic, the lone surviving cub which was later named “Joe Biden”, became very popular among the netizens.
The internet sensation made his first public appearance on Thursday when the zoo finally opened after four and a half months of hiatus as per the government instructions.
Earlier this year, the authorities declared the Chittagong Zoo closed from April 1 due to the rise in the Covid-19 case in the district as a result enthused visitors were deprived of an opportunity to meet the famous tiger cub.
According to the zoo sources, tigress “Jaya” gave birth to three cubs. Two of them died but fortunately one survived. The survived cub was named “Joe Biden” after the newly elected United States President, in honour of a positive decision on climate change.
After birth, the cub was raised under the care of Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, the deputy curator and doctor of the zoo.
Later, the zoo authorities place the cub in a cage on April 21 after he turned five months old.
Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, deputy curator of the zoo, said: “The Chittagong Zoo is once again welcoming visitors. The tiger cub was brought before the public for the first time today [Thursday]. He seems to have adapted to the environment of the zoo quite well.”
The 41-inch-long cub, weighing 21 kg, is being given 600ml of milk and 1.5 kg of meat every day, he added.
In December 2016, a pair of Bengal Tigers were brought from South Africa to the zoo at a cost of Tk33 lakh. At present, the zoo has a total of nine tigers—three males and six females.
The Chittagong Zoo has 620 animals of 66 species. A total of 40 animals were born at the zoo during the Covid-19 pandemic.
