Welcome to my Music Theory for Guitarists series on YouTube! We're going to bust music theory confusion for guitarists of all levels... including beginners! You see, music theory on guitar need not be difficult, as long as you learn it in the right order, even a beginner guitarist can soon understand it. In this lesson we're going to carry on looking at intervals. We saw last lesson that this is how we describe the relationship between notes in music. It helps us understand chords, scales, keys... and all sorts of other music theory topics!
We've covered the basic major scale intervals already. But what happens when we need to label an interval which is not in the major scale. Well, we describe it as a flattened or sharpened version of one of the major scale intervals. This gives us intervals like a flattened 2nd, flattened 3rd, sharp 4th, flattened 5th, sharpened 5th, flattened 6th and flattened 7th.
They also have the 'proper' names as well: minor 2nd, minor 3rd, augmented 4th, diminished 5th, augmented 5th, minor 6th and minor 7th. All this is clearly explained in the video so jump in and finish your study of intervals with me.
Next lesson: pentatonics!
