Recently, the Indian Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) gave speeches on the occasion of NHRC Foundation Day. However, the speeches lacked the very essence of human rights. Human right is a controversial concept, but nonetheless a significant one. It has been taken for granted around the world, but its importance is revealed in its evolution. This single concept changed the notion of sovereignty and brought the world together under the common ingroup identity of humans. In this respect, it is important to understand the idea of human rights and the responsibility of the state to protect the same.
