There are literally thousands of Kolkata Durga Puja pandals but some stand out more than others, as a result of their captivating decorations. Every year they compete to outdo each other with the most elaborate and innovative themes. The pandals in north Kolkata tend to be more traditional, whereas the ones in south Kolkata are contemporary and showy.
Last year, in 2015, the pandal at Deshapriya Park in south Kolkata drew an unprecedented crowd and stampede to see its 88 foot high idol, which was the tallest idol in Kolkata. This year, the spectacular idol has 1,000 hands to kill 100 demons. Another pandal that's attracting attention in 2016 is Beliaghata 33 Pally near Phoolbagan in east Kolkata, which is paying tribute to the yellow ambassador taxis.
The easiest way to visit the pandals is to take a Durga Puja festival tour, such as the ones organized by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (click on Online Booking and select Packages, or download list here), Calcutta Photo Tours, Calcutta Walks, and Let's Meet Up Tours.
