Story behind the piece:
In the 1900's, a man, obsessed with money, never let go of his work. It ultimately separated him and his family after years of neglect. He spent years and years working in his mansion and hired maids to do his dirty work and even take care of his aging body. He never left his mansion until one night he heard a mysterious voice from a woman in the walls:
"You did this. You and your soul alone. Thus are you doomed to the fate you so desperately desired. Labor until the last candlelight fades into smoke, and after that a bitter end for he who neglected his love."
His body froze. He looked around and noticed three candles still lit with a bright flame. He circled around his room to find a solution and decided to leave.
He packed his things and went to his front door. But when he tried to open it, it was locked.
He called for his maid, but she had already left.
He was stuck in the house he spent so long in. The house he once loved as his own space, now a cursed prison filled with dread.
Weeks went by as the man's body aged faster and faster. His bones grew weak and he could feel his organs failing as two of the three candles had gone out.
He desperately crawled to the last remaining candle as it was the final cursed flame that kept him alive for this long. A dreadful fate.
He mustered up the strength to pull himself up to the candle and started to pray.
"I'm so sorry! Please, just give me another chance! I will never neglect my love again! I want to live. But not like this! Please, for the love of God!"
Out of nowhere, the woman in the walls spoke again:
"You were doomed the moment you separated yourself from them. And now you must carry your burden on the shoulders of your soul."
And in that moment, as the man begged for mercy with tears in his eyes, the last candle faded to black.
