This is a look at the Pipistrel Velis Electro, concentrating on the powertrain. The airframe is essentially a Pipistrel Virus (pronounced vee-rus), with lower Vne and other limitations, to make EASA certification easier.
Unlike the Virus the Velis has no airbrakes as this would reduce the allowable battery weight by 14kg. Within the MAUW of 600kg the allowance for crew is 172kg, leaving 144kg for batteries, with a capacity of 22kWh.
