John Smith, a British officer in the Madras Presidency, accidentally discovered the entrance to Cave No. 10 of the Ajanta Caves on April 28, 1819 while hunting a tiger. A local shepherd boy guided Smith to the location. The caves were abandoned in the 5th century AD and weren't discovered again until about 1,400 years later.
