The LMB Biophysics Facility houses a wide range of state-of-the-art and in-house built instruments that enable the molecular characterisation of macromolecular size, shape, mass, stability, binding affinity, dynamics and interaction kinetics.
The facility is primarily intended for hands-on research by students, postdocs, and group leaders, who prepare samples and make measurements. Biophysics supports users in advice on experimental techniques and results, training and in collaborative research.
In this video Stephen explains the physical principles that underlie analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC). He describes the different type of experiment, detection systems, sample requirements and how data is analysed to investigate the mass, shape and interactions of sedimenting particles. He gives examples of how AUC has been employed in a variety of projects. In addition, he shows how recent methods have been applied to the analysis of glycoproteins and membrane proteins.
The Biophysics Facility is headed by Chris Johnson, supported by Stephen McLaughlin.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
