This video presents the country statement of Lao PDR to the Ministerial Roundtable on Zero Hunger at the 34th Session of the FAO Asia Pacific Regional Conference (APRC 34, 9-13 April 2018, Fiji) by Phouang Parisak Pravongviengkham, Minister for Agriculture and Forestry. He shares lessons learned on the road to food security: 1) there is a need of a very strong and sustained political will for food security and poverty alleviation programme; and Lao is participating in the Zero Hunger programme; 2) it cannot be only agriculture ministries that ensure zero hunger, it has to be inter-ministerial and go down to the local level and grassroots and be supported by budget; 3) A donor coordination mechanism is necessary so policies converge and with investment and technical assistance and this is co-led by the FAO with Stephen Rudgard FAOR and this is very important to success; 4) Lao makes use of South-South cooperation frequently, especially Thai, Viet Nam and even Cambodia as technical assistance from Europe is often too complicated; 5) food security is not stand-alone, it has to go hand-in-hand with forest management and forest sustainability. They have a Swedish standard to measure forest coverage, which is being reforested. This is Green Growth; 6) Natural resources for rich indigenous niche food crops are priorites, eg: indigenous rice is produced and this gets higher price than regular rice and also bamboo shoots and non-timber forest products are also niche products. It is also easier now to export “Green” products to China and for niche products.
