2022 Porsche Panamera
Starting at $89,750
High handling and lively despite its size, fast acceleration and plenty of practicality.
Low pricing quickly gets out of hand with options, touch-sensitive internal controls are tricky, and the hybrid model's braking system isn't quite as polished as it should be.
Verdict If your ideal car is a 911 but you need more space, the Panamera is a good compromise.
Summary
There's no rule that says you can't drive a Porsche sports car every day, but the 911 and 718 two-door models aren't the most practical modes of transportation. Fortunately, the 2022 Panamera Sedan combines Porsche's driving pleasure style with a four-door body and luxurious cabin to create a more balanced option for those who need room for kids and luggage. Most models come with a turbocharged V-6 but a twin-turbo V-8 with 473 hp is also available, as is a plug-in hybrid with up to 552 hp. The handling of the Panamera is attractive and edgy, just like the brand's sports cars, and the fastback roofline gives it a more racing look than similarly priced sports sedans such as the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63. If you need more practicality, Porsche will sell you the Panamera Sport Turismo station wagon, or if you want more power, there is also the Panamera Turbo; We review both models separately.
What's new for 2022?
A new Platinum Edition package is now available on the 2022 Panamera, Panamera 4S and Panamera 4 E-Hybrid models. The Exterior Package includes a black exterior livery, unique 21-inch wheels with a satin platinum finish, and smoked headlight lenses. Inside, the Panamera is equipped with the Platinum Sport Package badge on the aluminum door sill guards. The Panamera also gains Porsche's updated infotainment system - PCM 6.0 - which makes Android Auto a standard feature and also offers wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and built-in interfaces for Apple Music and Apple Podcasts.
Pricing and which one to buy
Panamera: $89,750
Panamera 4: $94,350
Panamera 4 E-Hybrid: $106.350
Panamera 4S: $107,750
Panamera 4S E-Hybrid: $116,050
Panamera GTS: $132,050
Porsche offers the Panamera in such a wide range of models and prices, and your budget and needs should determine what works best for you. There's nothing wrong with the packaging, including the base model, which produces 325 horsepower and starts at less than $100,000. We're also big fans of the Executive models, which have a longer wheelbase and offer much more rear-seat legroom than the standard chassis. For our part, we feel the Panamera 4S strikes the best balance between performance and value, with its 2.9-liter, 440-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 and standard all-wheel drive. Porsche also offers an endless array of options, but don't skip the adaptive air suspension, which improves the hatchback's ride and handling, or the Sport Chrono package. The latter adds a Sport Plus setting with Launch Control and increases the response and performance of the Panamera's engine, transmission and chassis.
Engine, transmission and performance
With agile handling and a smooth ride, especially when equipped with the optional adjustable air suspension, the 2022 Panamera is a joy to drive. It also offers the comfort and luxury expected of an expensive four-door hatchback. Every Panamera comes with a powertrain, but only some wear the Turbo badge. We review those models separately. The basic rear-wheel drive Panamera and all-wheel drive Panamera 4 feature a 325-horsepower turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6. Under the hood of the faster 4S - 60 mph in 3.6 seconds - a 440-horsepower, 2.9-liter V-6 twin-turbo engine. The upgrade to the GTS gives you a 473-hp 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine. It's better performing than the non-Turbo line; However, its suspension sacrifices some ride quality in the name of handling. Porsche also offers the additional Panameras, with a 455-hp powertrain in the 4S E-Hybrid and a 552-hp setup in the 4S E-Hybrid. Buyers looking for an all-electric Porsche should check out the new Taycan.
