In this video, Logee's horticulturist and third generation owner, Byron Martin, talks about the Banana Shrub (Magnolia figo). Also known as the port wine magnolia (and formerly known as Michelia figo), this evergreen tree in the magnolia genus is native to China and is cultivated as an ornamental plant for its fragrant flowers that bloom all year. With a delightfully sweet, banana-like floral scent, the Banana Shrub is most heavily laden with 2" cream-white, purple rounded, or light-purple flowers in late winter and early spring. Winter hardy to USDA Zones 8-10, this shade tolerant magnolia is a must for the fragrant garden!
