STORYLINE:
European Central Bank President Wim Duisenberg said on Wednesday that inflation within the Euro-zone is expected to average "just above" the European Central Bank's targeted 2 per cent ceiling in 2002.
It marks the third consecutive year that inflation has averaged above the ECB's self-imposed limit.
Inflation in the Euro-zone did fall to just below 2 per cent in June, for the first time in two years, at 1.8 per cent, however that retreat is largely expected to be short-lived.
Duisenberg made the statement at a Frankfurt ceremony in which German Finance Minister Hans Eichel awarded him with Germany's Grand Cross, First class of the Order of Merit.
Duisenberg was awarded the cross for his work with the European Union Central bank.
Duisenberg said he saw the award as a symbol of trust in his abilities, while acknowledging other key decision makers in the ECB.
