A very special segment from the herd's time at the waterhole recently... their favourite place to be! What strikes as so incredible about the different parts of this new scene is what an incredible young Kumbura is to Khanyisa.
Born in around 2009, Kumbura is only 12 years old and already proving herself as an incredible allomother. She follows the calf, fellow orphan, Khanyisa around everywhere, putting her safety and wellbeing first. Klaserie is always close-by too, with her mother, Setombe following after her. The dynamics of female breeding herds is always so heartwarming to watch and learn more about.
In this clip, you will also see the absolute power and status that dominant bull, Sebakwe has among this special blended herd, easily pushing his way through the crowd of females, and Mambo on the side, as the elephants all enjoy the sand and mud beside the dam. Tokwe is just as strong in her presence as Matriarch, while all the other females stay close together. Lundi joins them later on as the herd leave the waterhole for the day, with Khanyisa stepping into line beside and behind her.
You'll get to enjoy some incredible close-up sights (and sounds...) as Adine films the herd on this beautiful day out in the wilderness. Also incredible is how Klaserie steps her trunk in to help Khanyisa get up after lying down on the slanting sandy banks. You can recognise Klaserie due to the little nick or tear in the bottom of her left ear and a similar matching tear on the top section of her left ear. Also... her mother Setombe is never far from her, with her own distinctive tear-drop-shaped tear in her left ear at the top.
These are only some of the ways we identify the different elephants: their ears, tusks, forehead shapes, size, eye lashes, and tails. When you start to look at the differences between each elephant in the herd, their characters really come alive, as though a new language presents itself, a new way to read the wilderness and its animals.
