It’s Christmas around the corner and it’s wonderful to see so many fun Christmas trees being loaded on to Social Media. The majority have been quite traditional, but there have been a few that have stood out for their originality and sheer quirkiness. Today we look at some of the more unconventional trees from around the world…

13 - Got to love your starches
This is a potato Christmas tree, and the entire tree is made up from potatoes. It was designed in 2007 by Peruvian students in Lima. They used 100kg’s of potatoes to create it. These potatoes also have the strangest names, like “makes the daughter-in-law cry,” “best red woman,” “like a deer’s white tongue,” “like an old bone” and “red shadow” and the Aymara people are known to have cultivated over 2,000 varieties of the humble, yet delicious potato.


12 - A world record!
The largest human Christmas tree in the world was created in India in 2015. It was recognized by Guinness World Records, and took place in Chengannur, India. 4,030 people took part in the event, which beat the previous score of 2,945 participants. Volunteers all wore green, red or brown and the end result was a perfectly large human Christmas tree.


11 - I want to ride my bicycle
Lismore in Ireland once made a Christmas tree using only recycled push bikes. They tried to make amends, as the previous year the council was accused of putting up the worst Christmas tree in the world. The tree was made in secret, with volunteers coming in to weld the bikes together and kids coming in to paint it. Was the town impressed with the bike Christmas tree? The answer, a resounding yes!


10 - It never rains, but it pours
This is the creation of Burberry’s creative director and CEO, Christopher Bailey. It’s a very British Christmas tree, made from silver and gold umbrellas. It was on display at London’s Claridge’s hotel, and made fun of the dismal British weather and paid homage to Burberry’s humble beginnings, when they first started making trench-coats.


9 - Going green
Here’s another environmentally friendly Christmas tree that was built using 5-gallon water bottles and PVC Pipes. The effect is dazzling!


8 - Let it glow
This 60-foot LED tree graced Dublin’s skyline in 2008. It was made with 100,000 bulbs ad weighed 5 tons. It was designed by Blachere Illumination, who were also responsible for the famous light shows at the Eiffel tower, as well as the illumination on Champs Elysées, the lights of Monaco, St Petersburg and Toulouse.


7 - I do it for the Ho’s
This Ski tree was created in 2013 by Anton Viditz-Ward, a local metal artist in Telluride, Colorado. The tree is made from donated skis and topped with a star made from ski poles. He says this installation is “a celebration of snow sports and what makes Telluride funky.”


6 - 99 Bottles of beer on the wall
Not on the wall, but on the tree – and it’s way more than 99 bottles! This Christmas tree was unveiled by Heineken and boasts 1,100 full bottles of beer. It was on display in Shanghai, China and definitely made passers by drool for one of those ice-cold beverages. It would have definitely upped their sales though if the beer tree was displayed in places who experience Christmas in the summer time, like South Africa or Australia!


5 - Steeped in tradition
It doesn’t look like much from far-away, but get up close and personal with this 13-foot tree, and you see how intricate the decorations are. This tree has been going up every year for 30-years, and volunteers begin folding origami ornaments in July already. There are over 500 folded ornaments on this beautiful tree on display at the American museum of natural history.


4 - Shine bright like a diamond
Over the years, Swarovski, has released some of the most beautiful trees you can imagine. This particular one was covered in 2,000 Swarovski crystal beads and was located at Siam Paragon Shopping Mall in Thailand. There’s another one that goes up in Zurich’s central station every year, which is adorned with 7,000 crystals!


3 - Dear Santa, I can explain
This is the Traffic Tree located in Berlin, Germany and it towers nearly 40-feet tall and releases fire every half hour. It’s been deemed, “Germany’s Ugliest Christmas Tree”, and was the design of Thomas Plattner, who used scrap metal and junkyard paraphernalia to create the tree. He wanted to highlight the throwaway nature of the society we live in.

This is any teddy lovers dream come true – a Christmas tree made entirely of teddy bears!


1 - Best gift ever
You can’t go wrong with chocolate, and this chocolate Christmas tree is just spectacular. It was created by Patrick Roger to raise funds for France’s annual telethon. The tree also had some company in the form of Santa Claus, reindeers and a sleigh. Now this is a winter wonderland I can totally identify with!
