The Waldstein Ensemble was a core piano quartet Ensemble comprised of Gerhard Schulz, who was a member of the world-famous Alban Berg Quartett, pianist Noam Greenberg, violist Guy Ben-Ziony and cellist Lilia Schulz-Bayrova.
The musicians met at the International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove where Gerhard teaches annually at the Master Classes. He met Noam there in 2001 when Noam was taking part in the master classes given by András Schiff, and later Gerhard and Noam with Lilia went on to take part in the Open Chamber Music tour. Guy was also a regular participant in the IMS Open Chamber Music Seminar, and has taken part in one of the tours in a different year. They have been performing piano trios, string trios and piano quartets regularly since 2001, and in 2008, when the Alban Berg Quartet played their last season, Gerhard had more time to devote to this new Ensemble. In choosing the name of Beethoven’s famous patron the Waldstein Ensemble emphasised its connection to the great classic-romantic Viennese tradition.
They have given concerts together until 2012, among others in Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and London’s Wigmore Hall.
