Dead Estate is a horror twin stick roguelike game that came out way back in October 2021. It was developed by Milkbar Lads, and published by 2 Left Thumbs. I have been interested in playing it for a while now, so I finally grabbed it from Steam since it is currently on sale for 50% off until July 11, 2024. It can be found on Steam at: [ Ссылка ]
Dead Estate is a game that I have read is kind of like "Resident Evil, if it were a roguelike game", and since the Resident Evil series are some of my all time favorite games (people that know me know that I am WAY into Umbrella Corp....I mean I DO have a Umbrella Secret Service tattoo on my neck), I HAD to give it a shot. I definitely wasn't disappointed, but I will have to play more before I can say if it is worthy of the 95% positive reviews it got. Especially when most of those positive reviews only mention the top-heavy witch, and not the gameplay.
One thing that felt a bit off to me (and maybe I just have to get more accustomed to it), is the hitboxes. There were a few times that I got hit that I felt like I shouldn't have, and when you play a game like this where you don't have much health (especially Jules), it feels a bit punishing. Again, this is just my first time playing, so I may just need to get more familiar with the game.
The art and music are great! I love pixelated games (I grew up on the NES), and chiptune will ALWAYS have a place in my heart. Listening to the game's soundtrack took me back to the days of games like Zombies Ate My Neighbors. If you are older like me, and want a trip down nostalgia lane, this game has you covered! My ears were as happy as my eyes were playing Dead Estate!
The characters seem pretty varied so far, with Jeff being a long-ranged attacker, slower in movement and higher in health, while Jules is quicker on her feet, is a close-ranged attacker with her Shotgun, and has a lower pool of health. I noticed one of the pics on Steam shows 8 other characters, so I am interested in how they all function gameplay wise, and how you go about earning them. The only DLC is for the OST, so they must be unlocked in-game it seems (which is good).
I would say that if you are looking for a rogue to play, and love horror games (especially ones from yesteryear), give it a shot! The game was only $7.50 USD because of the sale going on Steam right now, so it's not expensive, and there is always the refund policy if it is not your cup of tea. Hopefully this video will help your decision!
