During this time, he was imprisoned by Adil Shah of Bijapur but managed to escape and went on to establish his own territory in Pune. Shahaji Maharaj married Jijabai, a noblewoman from the prominent Nimbalkar family, and they had several children, including Shivaji Maharaj, who went on to establish the Maratha Empire.
