Over at South Korea′s National Assembly,... lawmakers adopted a resolution condemning North Korea for the recent landmine attack.
Also, the parliament voted in favor of an arrest motion for a former opposition party lawmaker accused of graft.
Park Ji-won provides us the details.
On Thursday′s full assembly,.. lawmakers adopted a resolution condemning North Korea for last week′s landmine attack,.. and urged the regime to apologize.
It calls the attack a military provocation in clear violation of the armistice agreement that ended the hostilities of the Korean War.
It also calls on the South Korean government to respond sternly and swiftly to any further provocations from the North.
Lawmakers also gave consent to the arrest of three-term lawmaker Park Ki-choon who left the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy party earlier this week,... amid charges he took nearly 300-thousand U.S. dollars in illegal political funds in exchange for influence peddling.
The vote was conducted by secret ballot.
One-hundred-37 lawmakers,.. among 236 present at the session,.. voted in favor,.. enough number to meet the quorum of the majority vote of the members present.
Before the vote,.. Park spoke to the full assembly,... acknowledging all the charges against him.. and said he′s immensely sorry for causing the parliament and the public harm.
″I will not give lame excuses. I will not hide behind immunity. I will not ask for a shield. I′d follow legal procedures,... just like any other member of the general public.″
Park′s arrest was subject to parliamentary consent,... as sitting lawmakers are immune from arrest while the assembly is in session.
This marks the fourth time in the current assembly that lawmakers agree to the arrest of a sitting lawmaker.
″With the vote,.. lawmaker Park is expected to be in court sometime next week,.. and his detention will be decided according to the result of the court hearing.″
