On November 11, 1918, at 5:00 a.m., representatives from the Allied powers and Germany signed an armistice agreement in a railway carriage in the Compiègne Forest in northern France, marking the formal cessation of hostilities in World War I. The terms of the armistice were harsh. Germany was required to withdraw its forces from occupied territories, disarm its military, and hand over its artillery and airplanes.
The signing took place in the early morning hours, but the armistice was set to take effect at “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” The hours leading up to the armistice were still marked by intense fighting, as some units pressed forward to gain strategic ground before the ceasefire.
When 11:00 a.m. finally arrived, the guns fell silent. The end of the war was celebrated around the world, with spontaneous parades and gatherings filling city streets.
November 11 is now observed as a day of remembrance in many countries. The U.S. marks it as Veterans Day, honoring all who have served in the military.
