STORYLINE:
Tensions ran high on Friday as dozens of Georgians demonstrated against the ongoing presence of Russian troops in the country, in the wake of a war earlier this month.
Demonstrating in front of a makeshift Russian army base in the village of Chkhorotsku, protesters waved Georgian flags and later burned a banner bearing the image of Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, as they demanded that the Russian troops go home.
"It's a shameful ambition to conquer their neighbour. A small country and we condemn it and we will never surrender, we will never give up," said one of the protesters.
Tbilisi announced it would sever diplomatic ties with Moscow to protest against the persistent presence of Russian troops.
Lawmakers had voted unanimously late Thursday to break off ties with Russia, branding it an "aggressor country" in their conflict over two separatist regions in Georgia.
Russia criticised the move, pinning blame for a breakdown in relations on Tbilisi.
Many Tbilisi residents appeared supportive of their country's decision.
