(7 Apr 2018) BRITAIN'S PRINCE CHARLES MADE AN HONOURARY HIGH CHIEF IN VANUATU
Prince Charles has been made an honorary high chief in Vanuatu, the country where some locals revere his father, The Duke of Edinburgh, as a god.
The Prince of Wales joined Australian Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, on a flight to the Pacific nation as a side trip while on an official visit to Australia.
After being met at the airport by Vanuatu President Tallis Obed Moses, Prince Charles toured a craft market and a rebuilt hospital that had been destroyed in Cyclone Pam in 2015.
The visit finished with a formal ceremony at the Malvatumauri Council of Chiefs, where the Prince was dressed in a grass skirt and palm leaf head-dress, before taking part in a Royal Kava ceremony to make him chief with the name of Mal Menaringmanu.
Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Vanuatu (then the New Hebrides) in 1974, when a strong link was formed between the Duke and the people of a village on the island of Tanna, who believed that the Duke was the physical representation of an ancient warrior that was part of their legend.
