STORYLINE:
As American bombing continues, northern alliance soldiers are continuing to move towards the frontline with the Taliban.
The opposition fighters are confident they will be able to capture the Afghan capital of Kabul, an opposition commander said on Thursday.
Opposition fighters are guarding their positions near Bagram, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Kabul.
The feeling on the front line was tense following one of the most significant military actions taken by U.S. forces - the bombing on Tuesday of a Taliban area just behind the front line.
Until then, the American-led airstrikes had stayed away from the area that separates the northern alliance from the Taliban positions north of Kabul.
The northern alliance had been hoping that the United States would attack the Taliban front line near the capital and possibly clear the way for a rebel advance that could take Kabul.
But it remained unclear on Thursday if the U.S. action near the front line was designed to open the way for a rebel advance.
