AVE REGINA CÆLORUM
Vytautas Miškinis (b. 1954)
Ave Regina Cælorum is one several Marian antiphons that venerates the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and as Christ’s intercessor. As with many antiphons, this has been set into choral music by noted composers as early as the 15th century.
Going hand in hand with MCS’ interpretation of Miškinis’ polyphonic setting of this prayer is a digital artwork masterfully incorporated by MCS alumnus, Rev Cruz.
“Inang Desay” is a reimagining of the original baroque painting “Mary, Undoer of Knots,” and it incorporates elements that are uniquely Filipino. It draws from the devotion that the original painting inspired, visualizing the “knots” as bindings that limit one’s faith and freedom. Humbly, as children before the Holy Mother, we beg Her to break this bondage – bondage from addiction, abuse, problems and struggles that seem impossible to fix. And she does so easily. She transforms this mirage of freedom (depicted as origami doves) into real freedom (real free doves) because of faith in God. As Pope Francis said “Nothing is impossible with God’s mercy! Even the most tangled knots are loosened by His grace.”
