How to refrigerate your sourdough starter | Bread Baking for Beginners
I’ve had my starter in the fridge for several months now, and it’s been such a nice break! I’ve maintained regular feedings approximately every 2-3 weeks while it’s been stored in the fridge. I will take that option over daily feedings any day!
In all seriousness, this is something I wish I would have done sooner. I’ve been known to take my starter along with me on trips, just so I could keep up with his feeding schedule!
If you’re planning a trip, have a super busy schedule, or are just plain tired of your needy starter, definitely consider refrigerating it for a bit!
When you’re ready to take your starter out of the fridge and bake with it, just:
- Let it thaw out on the countertop for about an hour
- Discard most of the starter (leave yourself about 2-3 tablespoons in the jar)
- Feed as you normally would, or feel free to use the recipe in the video
- Let it rest at room temperature for about 8-12 hours, then feed again
- 8-12 hours later, your starter should be at peak activity & ready to use!
