STORYLINE
ARMANI LOVES A LADYLIKE STYLE FOR SUMMER 2012
Giorgio Armani on Saturday delivered one of the most ladylike collection seen thus far on the spring-summer 2012 preview runway.
Surprisingly, it was for his second line, Emporio label, which usually offers a more sporty take on fashion.
In his show notes, the designer calls the collection "Neodesign," which could be interpreted as a contemporary take on the 1920''s flapper era permeating the current Milan fashion shows, which wrap up on Monday.
Armani gives the basic low-waisted silhouette a contemporary graphic look by defining the shape in black and white, playing with modern cutout themes, turning a jacket into a top or a coat into a sleeveless dress, and adding a sculpted twist to yesteryear''s crinoline.
The Armani models looked like they just walked out of a tableau from a 1920''s beach resort. They wore super chic Panama hats, black high-heeled sandals and carried a transparent beach bag. Think Deauville, where Coco Chanel got her first fashion inspirations.
The show''s finale was very Armani, given his penchant for the androgynous. Two female models walked down the runway in sparkling versions of the collection''s black and white silhouette - one in a floor-length gown, the other in a soft tuxedo jacket with matching trousers.
