General Motors announced it is providing an “optional” OnStar subscription for all Buick, GMC and Cadillac Escalade vehicles.
OnStar will be available in the vehicles for three years and cost $1,500.
However, users will pay for the service whether they choose to use it or not.
While technically standard, OnStar remains optional on GM pricing documents and websites.
A GM spokesperson told CNN Business that making OnStar standard was simpler.
The spokesperson also claimed buyers elect to get OnStar anyway but did not provide an exact percentage.
CEO Mary Barra said GM expects subscriptions to contribute significantly to revenue.
GM also hopes to incorporate in-vehicle shopping and a hands-free highway driving system.
