NSW stands for Nest Speed Weaponry, which is a tribute to the Zipp Advance Development Lab, nicknamed the NEST. Manufactured in Zipp Headquarters in Indianapolis, Zipp NSW’s 858’s are all carbon clinchers and the latest improvement over the legendary 808 Firecrest and original NSW design.
New to the Zipp 858 NSWs is the radical sawtooth design. This variable 77/82 rim depth reduces aerodynamic drag and side forces, increasing stability and making the bike much easier to handle in harsher crosswind conditions.
Zipp has introduced Hyperfoil technology with the 858 NSW’s, which is a improvement over previous dimpling designs. The HexFin ABLC dimples help to further stabilize the wheel by managing unpredictable wind flow over the wheel.
As with the 808 NSW wheelset the, 858 NSW’s feature Zipp’s Cognition hubset, which decreases drag and improves durability over the 77/177 Firecrest hubset.
The Zipp Cognition front hub uses a scalloped edge design to distribute load evenly and maintain bearing pressure when spokes are tightened ensuring durability and performance.
In the rear hub, Zipp’s Axial clutch technology significantly reduces friction and increases momentum by releasing a ratchet mechanism in the hub while coasting, re-engaging instantly when pedaling resumes.
All Zipp NSW (and Firecrest) wheels utilize Showstopper technology for the rim braking track. Directional grooves on the brake track help to displace water and provide a better stopping surface in wet conditions.
Impress Zipp graphics are printed directly onto the carbon so that heavier plastic stickers can be avoided and airflow over the dimpled shaping can be better maintained.
