A side impact crash test was conducted on a 2007 Toyota Tundra on August 28, 2007. The stationary test vehicle was struck on the driver side (perpendicular to its longitudinal axis) by a 1,500 kg moving barrier fitted with an IIHS side impact deformable element and traveling at 31.1 mi/h (50.1 km/h).
During the crash, the moving barrier’s deformable element was 0.2 cm above and 0.1 cm rearward of the precrash impact target. Set-up measurements for the SID-IIs dummies sitting in the driver and left rear passenger seats are provided in the Appendix, Dummy Clearance Measurements.
All doors remained closed during the crash. Postcrash investigation of the vehicle showed no separation of the door latches from their strikers, and the B-pillar structure remained intact and attached to the adjoining structure at the roof rail and door sill. Postcrash measures of deformation indicated the most intruded portion of the B-pillar’s interior side was 18.2 cm outboard of the precrash longitudinal centerline of the driver’s seat, and was 65.1 cm outboard of the longitudinal centerline of the vehicle.
Figures 2-5 show the driver and rear passenger compartments postcrash, with and without the dummies. Figure 6 illustrates the precrash and postcrash vertical crush profiles measured at the B-pillar, and Figure 7 illustrates the precrash and postcrash plan view of the struck-side profile at the mid-door measurement line.
During the crash, the roof-mounted side curtain airbag contacted the driver dummy’s head, and the seat-mounted side thorax airbag contacted the dummy’s shoulder and torso. Upon rebound, the dummy’s head contacted the driver head restraint.
During the crash, the roof-mounted side curtain airbag contacted the rear dummy’s head. The pelvis, torso, and shoulder were loaded by the intruding rear passenger door. The dummy’s head, neck, and torso then rebounded without significant interaction with the vehicle interior.
For the driver and rear dummies, none of the recorded injury measures exceeded threshold values.
