The unforgettable opening scenes of the long-running MASH television series showed Bell H-13 helicopters arriving at a Mobile Army Surgery Hospital somewhere in Korea during that war. From the National Archives, here is rare footage of an actual MASH unit in Korea in 1952. The similarities are striking. Watching this archived film of soldiers being medevaced to safety is one more reason to honor the veterans of that conflict.
The Army called this helicopter the H-13. In civilian life, it is the Bell 47. Several 47s fly around the huge Wittman Field aircraft parking area during EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Rides may be purchased, as seen in this video from the 2021 event at the end of this program. There's also a surprise Hollywood helicopter at the end -- don't miss it!
