STORYLINE :
A Singaporean clothes designer is adding the final touches to a traditional outfit for Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders to wear at the upcoming summit.
Singapore is hosting this week's meeting of APEC, a regional economic bloc comprising of 21 Pacific Rim countries.
The city state is well known for its works of art such as the Merlion statue and the durian-shaped Esplanade theatre.
But now one of its artists wants to make the leaders of APEC get a real taste of Singapore's rich traditions.
Singaporean designer Wykidd Song has been tasked with creating this year's traditional outfit for the APEC leaders.
Song picked a design for the attire, which is deeply rooted in the Peranakan culture, a unique blend of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures.
These cultural mixes reflect Singapore's own identity as a multi-racial and multi-cultural society.
Song said he used one hundred percent linen to create the attire, which has hand-embroidered designs.
The colours of the shirt refer to the official logo for this year's meeting.
Male APEC leaders can pick blue, red or green, while female leaders will wear red.
The shirt comes with a set of unique accessories as well, such as round-shaped silver cufflinks for men and a silver brooch for women. Both accessories use precious gem stones.
Song said he wanted to create an item that the leaders could take home and wear again on another occasion.
The APEC leaders will be wearing the traditional shirt during the official dinner this Saturday.
