In this DIY video, we explain what you need to know about bearers and joists when building a deck.

Bearers run parallel to the ledger. If you need to join two bearers for a long span, you'll need to create a half lap directly over a post.

When attaching the bearer to the posts, you'll need to offset the bolts. Once the bearers are attached to the posts and level, attach diaganal strapping to brace the deck.

The joists run perpendicular to the joists at a maximum spacing of 450mm. The joists are attached to the bearers using nails on either side. If you need to join two joists, use a butt joint directly above a bearer.
